How to use team building workshops to fix team's communication?
Reading time: 4 min.
1. Identify the communication gaps

1.1 It is impossible to start treatment without diagnosis, analysis of symptoms and identification of causes. To begin formulating hypotheses related to improving communication, start with research.

1.2 A good approach is not to bring the level of communication in the team to a bad one, but to constantly maintain and develop their healthy state. With regular monitoring, the first signs of diseases are identified and eliminated using special solutions. However, if you are in a situation where problems have already accumulated, then a careful study of key communication processes (in chat, task manager, during meetings, etc.) can help you come up with the most effective hypotheses.

2. Choose the right activities

2.1 Based on your hypotheses, think through options for team-building activities. Please be careful - not every activity can be useful for a certain situation.

2.2 Based on the key pain points, from the previously selected options, take into account those that require minimal preparation time and a minimal amount of resources.

2.3 Get started preparing your first team building workshop. Please remember that the way the first workshop will be conducted largely determines the direction of the next ones.

3. Facilitate the workshops

3.1 Be sincere when preparing and conducting the workshops. Please don't do a workshop for the sake of a workshop, people feel both a sincere attitude and an insincere superficial approach. Even the best workshop program can lose its usefulness if the organizer implements it without soul.

3.2 When conducting a workshop, pursuing the key goals of the team, do not forget about each of its participants. Take into account the characteristics of each team member, make sure that everyone feels as comfortable as possible and can realize and develop their best skills during the workshop.

4. Reflect on the learnings

4.1 Be sure to get feedback from workshop participants (about their thoughts, feelings and actions).

4.2 Record the results of the workshop in your knowledge base. Analyze carefully, make decisions based on them, and take real action. If you see that the workshop has benefited the team and the participants talk about it with great joy, then congratulations – the process of regular workshops has begun.

4.3 Use your accumulated experience to conduct new workshop, improve what can be improved, eliminate what needs to be eliminated.

Key points

1. Quite often, team communication suffers from a number of psychological problems; your task is to gradually identify and eliminate them, instilling useful habits. One of the tools for this is team building activities.

2. Please remember: any team building activity is always about sincerity. The preparation and delivery of each workshop matters; the mood and atmosphere that you create at the workshop is especially important. Focus on good emotions and feelings, let the participants feel safe, bright and happy.

Good luck!
