What to do if your team needs both structure and creativity?
Reading time: 4 min.
1. Define Goals

1.1 Correct goal setting allows you not only to achieve the desired results, but also to develop team members’ skills in finding solutions to achieve it.

1.2 Set clear, understandable, achievable and inspiring goals; when each team member clearly understands the answer to the question “Where are we going?”, they are able to find answers to the question “How to do this?”.

2. Set Boundaries

2.1 Give team members a clear understanding of boundaries and freedom within boundaries; determine the key points and framework of the work process that do not prohibit, but create favorable conditions for creativity, and you will see a wonderful fruits.

2.2 Before you start working on a project, make sure that each team member is familiar with the boundaries and limitations of the project and is ready to comply with them.

3. Encourage Dialogue

3.1 Prepare a safe environment for creativity; the most favorable conditions are an atmosphere of respect, gratitude, care and goodwill. Unfavorable conditions include harsh criticism, punishment for ideas, gossip, talking behind one's back, bullying, etc.

3.2 Emphasize the importance of each team member's perspective and encourage collaboration.

4. Implement Systems

4.1 Use the Occam's Razor Principle when designing processes and selecting tools: Entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity. Build your house on a clear, strong and reliable foundation - avoid unnecessary elements, do not create conditions for disorder.

4.2 Within the framework of the infrastructure, with the help of tools, a process basis for work is set, within which lies the potential for creativity.

5. Review Regularly

5.1 Constant control of two areas (structure and creativity) helps maintain the balance of the system. An imbalance in one of the areas leads to failures and illnesses of the system.

5.2 If an imbalance occurs, it is important to quickly find the reasons, eliminate them, make the necessary decisions, and add the case to the knowledge base.

6. Reward Innovation

6.1 The favorable conditions for innovation are the same as for creativity (described in paragraph 3 of this article). They are based on respect, caring, gratitude and goodwill.

6.2 Give instant positive reinforcement for every positive change, thank, praise and do not skimp on resources for pleasant bonuses and surprises. Celebrate the innovative achievements of your team members.

Key points

1. Structure and creativity are two sides of the same coin. Keep an eye on the balance - an imbalance of one of the elements leads to failures and illnesses of the system.

2. Set clear boundaries within which conditions are conducive to creativity. Create a safe environment for ideas and innovation; build a culture based on respect, caring, gratitude and goodwill.

Good luck!
