What to do if your team management skills are outdated?
Reading time: 4 min.
1. Assess your current skills

1.1 The skills assessment should be carried out in the context of your career plans. Formulate clear criteria and metrics by which you can begin to assess your current skills.

1.2 Use multiple methods in order to obtain as objective results as possible; please avoid subjectivity and perception traps.

2. Set learning goals

2.1 Set achievable and adequate goals, do not try to embrace the immensity in a short period of time, tune in to a marathon, not a sprint. Please remember: inadequate expectations lead to loss of motivation and interest in learning.

2.2 When setting goals, immediately think about achieving them - your plan, milestones, etc.

3. Seek learning opportunities

3.1 A good approach is to constantly be open to new learning opportunities, align them with your current plan, and take advantage of them.

3.2 Please remember: learning opportunities can lie in both theoretical and practical areas; in some cases, the best results can be obtained from the right book, in others - from participating in a new project.

4. Evaluate your progress

4.1 Define metrics and indicators (based both on your company's key goals, pain points, and needs, as well as your career and personal goals) to monitor and evaluate your progress.

4.2 Conduct regular assessments using several methods; using both self-assessment and external assessment. Avoid subjectivity and errors of perception.

5. Adapt to change

5.1 If you don't like certain weather, you may simply not have the right gear; new market conditions require the ability to quickly independently study and apply new technologies; ability to evaluate the skills of colleagues, the ability to solve complex problems and make reasonable decisions.

5.2 A good approach is a combination of proactive and reactive responses to changes in the external environment (preparation + adjustment).

Key points

1. Please remember that training your team management skills is a journey, not an end point.

2. Shape your training plan based on both the key goals, pain points and needs of the company, as well as your career goals. By focusing on what's most important, you can minimize the chance of getting lost and taking the wrong path.

3. Regularly evaluate your skills using multiple methods to avoid subjectivity and perception errors.

4. Don't make training boring, tune in to a marathon, not a sprint. Keep the rhythm, move regularly and gradually, have fun, enjoy the process.

Good luck!
